Burdge & Associates' award-winning Birdview project nicely juxtaposes sleek, contemporary design with traditional materials transforming this private  Malibu home into a modern masterpiece.

One of the challenges presented to contemporary designers is preventing a sense of dehumanization which can easily occur in modern-styled architecture. Its emphasis on geometry and minimalism can quickly transform a space from cutting-edge into one that is utilitarian and in the worst cases down right inhospitable. Burdge & Associates Birdview project, which won a PCBC Gold Nugget Award of Merit in 2012, is immediately recognizable as a shining example of what principled, modern architecture can be.

In the shot below, we can clearly see the "form follows function" philosophy with this home's large seascape windows and open transitional spaces. This home is as much an interior habitat as an open gallery taking full advantage of the awesome panorama the Pacific coast offers. The incorporation of high quality materials and inclusion of textured metals and wood help regulate the austere form of the architecture.

The inclusion of concrete that has been molded with wood beams on perimeter columns and the second story above the main patio breaks up the monotonous cement and provides unexpected and interesting visual hotspots.  The horizontal stripes of the “boards” help balance the boxy nature of the home and the knotty lines soften the ridged 90° angles.

Rhythmic patterns are also created by the use of more human-scaled elements such as the twenty-eight Arcade Series Full Shield luminaries which surround the home.  Not only do these fixtures mimic the rectangular shape of the architecture and oversized glass windows, they bring a warm and earthy point of interest on the concrete façade. The dark brown finish of the copper shields brings the colors of the finely manicured landscaping into the patio spaces and translates that visual language directly into the home with the made-to-be-seen carpentry.
